I exist in the basis of my father. As a graduating art student and as a son, I turn my everyday sweat into rice in an art form, in return for the presence of my father by my self-existence.

Son >

Picture Book
170 cm x 150 cm x 50 cm

The difference between you and me is how well we hide our evil and desire. Some hidden their evil deep down while some manifest their evil inattentively. The focus of my work is the intimation in the story that will reveal the truth gradually. The truth discloses the dark side of adult from their seemingly ordinary behavior. It also describes how a child's mind was twisted into an extremes state after experiencing these evil deeds.

As the only son in the family, I am used to taking my parents' nurturing and caring for granted. Our roles however will swap in the approaching future and taking care of them will be my responsibility. The carefree status quo becomes an indescribable heaviness.

I try to transform this relationship in between lightness and heaviness through mixed media and installation.

<他 / 她是 He / She is>

Marker on canvas
10cm x 10cm (250 pcs)

Appearances help us recognize the identities of person due to their unique facial features. In fact, it is undependable and indefinite, as identities change in different situations. There is a time when we encounter a person, who gives us a sense of having met before, yet we are unable to recap his or her identity.
The work displays a series of some familiar “TV characters” through an animated approach on facial drawing. It leads viewers to explore the original identities of faces; and creates a relevant platform to re-experience the feeling of familiarity.

< BEYOND THIS >

Comics
23cm x 27cm

This world is filled with illusions and mysteries. I believe spiritual growth could lead us to the ultimate truth. Although the truth is very valuable to all mankind, most of us are unaware of a bigger world beyond the existing reality, like the characters living in the comic world. Comic as a medium could provide us a perspective to experience a new but similar world as an outsider from a God’s view. In this spiritual comic series, I try to pose questions towards the “reality” and express my beliefs.

Endless Isolation >

Resin, acrylic, rice paper and ink200cm x 400cm each (2 pcs)

I still remember when I took the train in Germany; I sat near the driver. The woods that were surrounding the train are so silent. For me, it was the first time travelling through a forest. During the journey, I thought the forest should be full of life and vitality. However, what I felt was the silence and well-arranged trees. The first thought came to my mind was the destruction from wars. This kind of silence was full of grief and pain. I had the same feeling when I walked through an underground street in Japan. I connect of my death experience and the grief. Also, we can see how the souls buried and transformed in the flourish city. This is what history tries to tell us and how worthy it is.

Artwork statement:
Heirloom is something, perhaps an object or family values that has been passed down for generations through family members. I try to change the traditional way ( from past generation to next generation )  of heirloom. I interpret my mother words and our memories, transform them into different small objects, and to express my gratitude to her.

About artwork:

I know that mum never put the past ( Poverty compelled her to quit school when she was Primary 2. ) behind her. As I understand, in some cases the people who created idea is much more important than the executor in contemporary art world . Without mum’s phrases in this 24 years, I am impossible to create this artwork. By making her words  the main idea of my work,  this is my graduation work as well as hers.

Artwork statement:

Someone found a little box named ‘art’.
Tapping on it, one heards birds twitter.
One smells lavender.
Some suddenly feel sad.
Some think that it can make big money.

The box can’t be opened.
And yet art is like sunshine, and it does exist.
Once in a while, it comes and goes.
Everyone will see it shine.

About artwork:

The value of art for me is its possibility of lightness. Art is liberal and inspire all the time, no matter who you are, no matter in what system or situation you are, and no matter what you are trying to find through art. Art work can be without a personal creation and can have a open-ended result. (It even can have no ending.)Through sharing a illusion, believe or enjoyment of art in public scene, I had nothing to say but a lot to hear. The process comes out with a relational aesthetic and in my point of view it is my ideal art, without boundary or even remind us that those boundary that we see is not really a clear line but a border that range could be test.

The artwork is a presentation of my exchanging event ( handmade ceramic exchanging a meal with stranger on street )host in Ping Shak Estate, 2012.

About artist:

Lam graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, with a minor in creative writing. Lam is interested in applied art and many of her works of art are made with ceramics and metals, which enable her to consider the complex relationships between people and the arts. She likes to travel around the world, and has been selling items on the street and bartering in Mexico in order to reflect on the publicity of the arts. She is convinced that art is life, and her creative work attempts to break down the boundaries between classes, taste, and other social categories in promoting genuine appreciation of art per se.
